We choose from published evidence: what hotels publish about themselves, their press releases, guidebooks such as the MICHELIN Guide and Forbes Travel Guide, Condé Nast Traveller, certifiers' own records, UNESCO and regional tourism bodies. We have not stayed at, eaten at, bathed at or visited any of these hotels for this piece, so nothing here is a first-hand account. No hotel hosted us or gave us a media rate, and this piece contains no affiliate links. We repeat no health claims made for any spring or treatment. Seasons, hours and prices change, so check with each hotel before you plan.

Europe took the waters long before it took to the slopes. In 2021 UNESCO inscribed eleven of the continent's spa towns, Baden-Baden among them, as a single World Heritage site, now listed by UNESCO as "The Great Spa Towns of Europe". All of them grew up around natural mineral springs, and the spa culture they record reached its height between about 1700 and the 1930s 1. Higher up, the Alpine hotels that followed swapped the pump room for the ski lift but kept the ritual of heat, water and mountain air.
"Clean luxury," for this guide, means hotels that publish specifics: a certification we can find on the certifier's own records, a figure for energy or water, a named spa product house, a kitchen garden, drinking water served in glass. Where a hotel makes a claim, we name it as theirs. A spa brand is not a certification, and we have not checked the ingredient lists of any product named here. We have not yet given any of these hotels a Clean Score. That needs written answers from each hotel, which we have not yet requested.
The thermal towns
Brenners Park-Hotel & Spa, Baden-Baden
Schillerstraße 4/6, in parkland beside the Oos river and Lichtentaler Allee, at the edge of the Black Forest 3.
Baden-Baden's tourism office says the town's thermal water rises from twelve springs at a depth of around 2,000 meters, some 800,000 liters a day at up to 68°C, and the tourism office points visitors to two thermal baths: the modern Caracalla Spa, with 5,000 square meters of pools and saunas, and the historic Friedrichsbad, which pairs Roman bathing with Irish hot-air baths across 17 stations 2. The Friedrichsbad keeps a tradition: swimwear is worn only on Wednesdays and Saturdays 2.
In the MICHELIN Guide's words, Brenners has been the town's finest hotel since 1872; the guide gives it Two MICHELIN Keys 3. It reopened after a two-year renovation, announced in a hotel press release of November 5, 2025 4. The release says the work upcycled historic wallpapers and fabrics into notebooks, cushion covers and bookmarks, kept century-old bricks and wood, restored the slate roof with 65,000 locally quarried tiles, and upcycled Dornbracht bathroom fittings that "save around 40 percent CO₂ compared to new production"; heating and cooling now run on regional district heating 4. Those are the hotel's figures. The same release names Augustinus Bader facials at the Brenners Spa & Wellbeing 4. We could not open the hotel's own website, and we found no certification for it.
- Season. We found no seasonal closure in what we could read. Check with the hotel.
- Getting there. The MICHELIN Guide puts the hotel about 15 minutes by car from Baden Airport (FKB) 3.
- Price. Rates vary by date and season; check with the hotel.
Grand Resort Bad Ragaz
Bernhard-Simon-Strasse 20, Bad Ragaz, in the pre-Alpine landscape of eastern Switzerland, close to Liechtenstein and Austria 9.
The resort dates its spring to 1242, when warm water was found in the Tamina Gorge; a bathhouse followed in 1350, a pipeline brought the water down to Ragaz in 1840, and in 1871–1872 the resort's founder opened what it calls Europe's first indoor thermal bath 5. The water surfaces at 36.5°C 6. The MICHELIN Guide places Bad Ragaz among the spring-fed mountain towns that were the classic Swiss escape before the ski resorts, down to "the ornate bathing hall fed by a natural hot spring," and gives the resort Three MICHELIN Keys, which the guide labels "an extraordinary stay" 10. Forbes Travel Guide lists it as "Soon to Be Rated," the category for properties its editors have previewed while inspectors assess them 11.
What earns it a place here is what happens to the water afterward. The resort says it supplies 14 baths and 18 drinking fountains, then flows at about 30°C into heat pumps that help heat the resort; with the heat pumps running on electricity "100 percent from hydropower," it says heating-oil consumption fell by more than 97 percent between 2011 and 2025 6. It also names food waste and recycling among its areas of action, after an ESG audit and a carbon-footprint calculation 7. It names no certification, and we could not find which product house the spa uses. The 19th-century Helenabad, at 35°C, is for ages 16 and up and opens daily from 7:30 a.m. to 8 p.m.; there is also a 29°C sports pool and a 28°C garden pool 8.
- Season. We found no seasonal closure; the thermal pools are listed as open daily 8.
- Getting there. The resort is about an hour's drive from Zurich, and Bad Ragaz station is about a ten-minute walk away, with a free shuttle for hotel guests 9. Forbes Travel Guide puts Zurich Airport 1 hour 15 minutes to 1 hour 40 minutes away 11.
- Price. Rates vary by date and season; check with the hotel.
Hôtel Royal, Evian Resort
960 Avenue du Léman, above Évian-les-Bains on the French shore of Lake Geneva 1618.
The Haute-Savoie tourism board traces Évian's water to the Cachat spring in the center of town, a listed historic monument that runs at a constant 11.6°C and is freely accessible; it says the water filters for more than 15 years through glacial rock on its way down from the Chablais mountains 12. The Hôtel Royal opened in 1909, according to Forbes Travel Guide 17, and its 1,700-square-meter evian®SPA is built around that journey of the water 13.
Of the seven hotels here, this is one of two whose certification we could confirm on the certifier's own records. The hotel says the Hôtel Royal and its sister Hôtel Ermitage hold the Clef Verte ("The Green Key"), a sustainable-tourism label developed in France by the Teragir association 14, and the Clef Verte directory lists the Hôtel Royal as a labelled hotel 15. We checked the listing on October 19, 2026; it does not say when the label was first awarded. The hotel's commitments page lists more 14. It says the grounds have been a refuge of the LPO, the French bird-protection league, since 2011; that its cleaning products are Ecocert certified; that it irrigates with collected rainwater; that its 3,000-square-meter kitchen garden is pesticide-free and grown using permaculture techniques; that the hotel is on wood-fired district heating; and that its gastronomic restaurant, Les Fresques, holds Ecotable certification. Those are the hotel's statements; we could not confirm them on Ecocert's or Ecotable's own records. The Clef Verte listing describes a 3,000-square-meter kitchen garden that supplies Les Fresques and La Véranda 15. Forbes Travel Guide reports bath amenities by Atelier Cologne and complimentary Evian water in the rooms, and lists the hotel as "Soon to Be Rated" 17. The MICHELIN Guide gives it One MICHELIN Key 16.
- Season. The hotel lists the evian®SPA as open every day, 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. 13; the MICHELIN Guide notes the outdoor pool is seasonal 16. We could not find a published annual closure. Check with the hotel.
- Getting there. The hotel puts Geneva airport 45 kilometers away, and says the lake boat from Lausanne takes about 35 minutes; the hotel arranges transfers from Évian station 18.
- Price. Rates vary by date and season; check with the hotel.
Terme di Saturnia Natural Spa & Golf Resort
At Saturnia, in southern Tuscany, about 150 kilometers from Rome's Fiumicino airport 22.
The resort says its spring has flowed for more than 3,000 years, at a constant 37.5°C and 500 liters a second, replenishing its pools every four hours; it describes the water as sulphurous and containing free carbon dioxide 19. Its history, as the resort tells it, runs from Etruscan times and bathing "even before Christ" to a permit for the baths in 1454, the Ciacci family's purchase in 1865 and the first hotel in 1919, with a full refurbishment in 2019 20. The resort is a member of The Leading Hotels of the World 20.
Its credential for this guide is a management one. The resort says its environmental and workplace-safety system is certified to ISO 14001:2015 and ISO 45001:2018 and reviewed each year by an independent auditor, Dimitto Certification Services, which it describes as recognized by ACCREDIA, Italy's accreditation body 21. We have not checked the certificate with the auditor or ACCREDIA. The spa sells its own line of thermal cosmetics; we have not checked their ingredient lists. We found no MICHELIN Key or Forbes Travel Guide listing for the resort.
- Season. We could not find published season dates. Check with the resort.
- Getting there. The resort puts Rome Fiumicino airport 150 kilometers away and Pisa 220; the nearest railway stations, Albinia and Capalbio, are about 45 kilometers away 22.
- Price. Rates vary by date and season; check with the hotel.
In the Alps
Lefay Resort & SPA Dolomiti
At Pinzolo, in Trentino, in the Madonna di Campiglio ski area 26.
The other certification we could confirm on the certifier's own records. Green Globe, the sustainability certifier, lists Lefay Resort & SPA Dolomiti among its Gold members in Europe 24; we checked on October 19, 2026. Green Globe says the resort was first certified in 2020 25 and announced its Gold status in February 2025, after five years of continuous, independently verified certification 23. In its announcement Green Globe reports that a photovoltaic system, a cogeneration plant and a biomass boiler burning locally sourced wood chips let the resort produce 78 percent of its own annual energy; that the laundry washes with ozone at lower temperatures and with less detergent; that in-room dispensers cut single-use plastic; and that 45 percent of the wine list comes from Trentino 23.
The MICHELIN Guide gives the resort, built in 2019, Two MICHELIN Keys 26, as it did in the 2025 selection 27, and describes a spa over four floors with an outdoor area, a saltwater lake and nine saunas 26. In Condé Nast Traveller's 2026 Readers' Choice Awards, readers placed it 15th in the magazine's list of the best destination spas in Europe 28. We could not open the resort's own website.
- Season. We could not find the resort's season dates. Check with the hotel.
- Getting there. Trentino's tourism board lists Verona, Bergamo, Venice and Milan as the nearest airports, one to two hours from the region 29; ask the hotel about transfers to Pinzolo.
- Price. Rates vary by date and season; check with the hotel.
Badrutt's Palace Hotel, St. Moritz
Via Serlas 27, in the village of St. Moritz; the best rooms overlook the lake 3435.
St. Moritz was a spa town before it was a ski town. Its tourism office says the town's iron-rich mineral springs were famous by the Middle Ages, and that the Forum Paracelsus museum keeps a spring tapping from the Bronze Age; the drinking fountains there and at the Spa Center are out of service until further notice 30. Badrutt's Palace opened in 1896 31.
The hotel says it heats and cools the building with a heat-pump system that draws on water from Lake St. Moritz, and that it is cutting single-use plastic and sources locally "whenever feasible" 31. It also says it is "joining EarthCheck," the sustainability certification and benchmarking program, with annual audits, and the same page, dated October 16, 2025, carries an "EarthCheck Silver Certificate" heading 31. We could not find the hotel on EarthCheck's own records, so we do not report it as certified. The spa has an indoor pool you can swim out of to a heated outdoor pool 35 and a salt steam room 33; we could not find which product house it uses. The MICHELIN Guide gives the hotel Three MICHELIN Keys 34, Forbes Travel Guide lists it as a Five-Star hotel 35, and Condé Nast Traveller's readers ranked it 19th in the "Rest of Europe" list of the magazine's 2026 Readers' Choice Awards for Europe's best hotels 36.
- Season. The hotel lists the winter season as December 3, 2026, to March 30, 2027; the 2026 summer season ran from June 5 to September 7 32. It is closed in spring and autumn 35.
- Getting there. The MICHELIN Guide puts the hotel about two and a half hours by car from Zurich Airport and five minutes from Samedan Airport for private flights 34. Forbes Travel Guide says the hotel offers complimentary transfers from the railway station 35.
- Price. Rates vary by date and season; check with the hotel.
The Chedi Andermatt
Gotthardstrasse 4, in the Alpine village of Andermatt 39.
No thermal spring here, but the most specific sustainability page we found among the seven. The hotel says all its electricity comes from hydroelectric stations and wind turbines in the Gotthard region; that the property is heated by carbon-neutral district heating on wood chips from the canton of Uri and a sawmill in Airolo, less than 50 kilometers away; and that waste heat from its cooling warms the spa floors 37. It says food waste is measured to reduce it, and that green waste and grease-trap material are turned into electricity 37. In the spa it uses Biologique Recherche and MEI Spa, with MEI Spa products in refillable dispensers in the spa and guest areas, and since autumn 2024 it has served Andermatt spring water, tapped fresh and bottled in glass, in all its restaurants and bars 37. The hotel also says it is classified at Level II of Swisstainable, the Swiss tourism sector's sustainability program 37. Swisstainable is a program, not a certification: its own page says it is not a certification system 41. Switzerland Tourism's own listing for the hotel shows it as "Engaged", the program's name for Level II; we checked on October 19, 2026 4142. Two of the dispenser scents are named "Mountain Field" and "Warm Amber" 37, so if you prefer unscented products, ask before you book.
The MICHELIN Guide gives the hotel Two MICHELIN Keys and calls it "sophisticated and ecologically friendly" 39. Forbes Travel Guide lists it as a Five-Star hotel 40.
- Season. Forbes Travel Guide says the hotel closes from late April to mid-May 40.
- Getting there. The hotel is about 90 minutes by car from Zurich and under two hours by train from Zurich's main station; Andermatt station, a Glacier Express stop, is within walking distance 38.
- Price. Rates vary by date and season; check with the hotel.
Before you go
- Spas and thermal water. Thermal pools, saunas, steam rooms, snow rooms and cold plunges are hot or cold by design 17, and the hotels here list thermal water from 28°C to 37.5°C 819. Heat and cold are not for everyone. If you are pregnant, or have a heart condition, high or low blood pressure or any other health condition, ask your doctor and the spa before you book, and follow the spa's own guidance once you are there. Some pools have age limits, such as 16 and up at Bad Ragaz's Helenabad 8.
- What the springs are said to do. Several of these hotels and towns describe health benefits for their water. We do not repeat them; we are not doctors, and nothing here is medical advice. If you are curious about a particular spring, talk to your doctor.
- Bathing customs. Some historic baths are textile-free on certain days; Baden-Baden's Friedrichsbad allows swimwear only on Wednesdays and Saturdays 2. Check the house rules before you go.
- Seasons. Some Alpine hotels close between seasons: Badrutt's Palace reopens on December 3, 2026 32, and The Chedi Andermatt closes from late April to mid-May 40. Check each hotel's dates before you plan.
- If you have allergies or sensitivities, contact the hotel directly before you book to ask about bath products, fragrance and food, and talk to your doctor if you have questions about your health.
