European Linen Worth Bringing Home

Tablecloths, napkins, tea towels and linen towels from five houses in Belgium, Italy and France, and one better-value maker in Lithuania: what each is made of, what the certifiers' records confirm, and how to buy it in Europe or have it shipped to Florida.

European Linen Worth Bringing Home

We choose from published evidence: makers' disclosures, certifications we verify on the certifier's own records, and reputable coverage. We have not used these products ourselves. This piece contains no affiliate links yet; when it does, they will be disclosed here.

Last checked: October 20, 2026.

Bed linen gets the attention, but a household's other linen does the daily work: the cloth on the table, the napkins beside the plates, the towel that dries the glasses. Europe still makes all of it, in Flanders, Italy, France and the Baltic, and much of it can be bought in a shop on a trip or ordered to a Florida address. For sheets, see our guide to linen and percale for hot sleepers; none of its sheet picks is repeated here, though four of the same houses appear.

This guide covers six makers. For each, we give what the maker says the cloth is made of, its weight and finish, the certifications we could confirm on the certifier's own records, prices on both sides of the Atlantic, and how it reaches the United States.

What to look for

Fiber, and the whole of it. Pure linen is spun from flax. Some table linens are linen-cotton blends, and the blend is not always in the product name. The houses below state 100 percent linen for the pieces we chose. We left out two attractive napkin sets because the fine print showed blends: Frette's Artistry Ajour is 60 percent cotton and 40 percent linen 44, and Busatti's Pienza napkin is 60 percent linen and 40 percent cotton 43.

Weight. Linen for the table is sold by weight, in grams per square metre (g/m²). Once Milano calls its 165 g/m² cloth "light linen" 21; Merci's napkins are 200 g/m² 23; Society Limonta describes its 290 g/m² Bon cloth as "heavy linen, but supple and soft" 14.

Finish. Words such as washed, stone washed, froissé (crinkled) and garment-dyed describe cloth that has been softened or dyed after weaving. Makers present them as relaxed: Society Limonta says its Bon tablecloth "doesn't need ironing" 14, and MagicLinen calls ironing optional, since "natural creasing is part of linen's character" 31.

Certifications. Three marks matter here. We describe each from its own published materials.

  • Masters of Linen. Run by the Alliance for European Flax-Linen & Hemp, it certifies European spinners, weavers and knitters of linen. The Alliance says it guarantees that every cultivation and processing step, from fiber to yarn to fabric, is carried out by European companies 1.
  • Masters of Flax Fibre (formerly European Flax). The same body's certification for European flax fiber. The Alliance says certified flax is grown with no GMOs and that in Western Europe flax is generally grown without irrigation 2.
  • OEKO-TEX STANDARD 100. A label for textiles tested for harmful substances. Each label carries a number that can be checked on OEKO-TEX's own site 3. It is a test for harmful substances, not a standard for how the fiber was farmed.

We check these on the certifier's own records before we call a certification confirmed, and we give the date. Most of the houses below print no certificate number for their table or kitchen linen, so there was nothing to look up. Where that is the case we say so, and any certification a maker mentions is the maker's word.

Care. Every maker below gives washing instructions, and they differ: Libeco and Society Limonta give 40°C 814, Frette asks for cold water for its linen napkins 29. Follow the label on the piece you buy.

The picks

1. Libeco: The Belgian Towel and Dock tea towel

Why it earns a place. A Belgian weaver whose certification we could confirm on the certifier's own record. The Alliance for European Flax-Linen & Hemp lists Libeco NV of Meulebeke, Belgium, as holding a Masters of Linen certificate (CEBEL58) for weaving, valid from April 1, 2026, to March 31, 2027 (checked 2026-10-20) 4. That certificate covers the company's weaving, not a named product. Remodelista wrote about Libeco's table linens in January 2008, calling them "sophisticated yet rustic" 13; that is an old piece, cited here for the brand's standing. Fiber and weave. The Dock tea towel is "a pure linen tea towel with a soft, washed finish," at 5.5 oz/yd² (roughly 186 g/m²), according to Libeco 5. The Belgian Towel is 100 percent linen with a washed finish, in a sateen weave that Libeco calls "very absorbent"; Libeco says it is "designed to be multipurpose" and can serve as a beach towel, a sauna towel or a throw, with the small sizes as guest towels 8. Libeco also says that flax "can absorb up to 20% of its weight in water," which is why it calls a linen towel "ideal for shining glassware" 7. The product pages do not print a country of manufacture; Libeco says its kitchen linen "is made with pride by Belgian artisans" 7, and its labels page explains that the Belgian Linen™ label stands for cloth woven in Belgium in which at least 85 percent of the flax, by weight, is of EU origin 11. Certifications. Masters of Linen, confirmed as a company-level certificate for Libeco NV's weaving (checked 2026-10-20) 4. Not a product certificate. Price. A Dock tea towel (27 x 27 inches) is around $41 at Libeco's US store and around €23 (70 x 70 cm) at its EU store 56. A Belgian Towel guest towel (21.5 x 25.5 inches) is around $68 / €38, and the large fouta (43 x 71 inches) around $274 / €156, as of October 2026 910. Who it suits. The cook who wants one good linen cloth for glasses and plates, and anyone who would rather have one generous linen towel by the pool than a stack of terry. Libeco's US store says its prices include all duties and taxes 7. Care. Up to 40°C with a mild soap, no chlorine bleach; line dry if you can, or tumble on medium 8.

2. Society Limonta: Bon tablecloth and napkins

Why it earns a place. The Italian house's everyday table linen, in heavy, garment-dyed linen. Society Limonta calls the Bon tablecloth "a classic in the Society Limonta table collections" 14. Remodelista called the company "experts in ultra-luxe Italian linen" in a May 2026 roundup of linen sheets 20, and Interni wrote in December 2018 that "the Society Limonta table is always sophisticated, even when it is set in an informal way" 19. Fiber and weave. 100 percent linen at 290 g/m², garment-dyed, with what the maker calls "a natural look." Society Limonta says the cloth is machine washable at 40° and "doesn't need ironing" 14; it describes the Bon napkins as "100% froissè linen," also 290 g/m² and garment-dyed 16. The product pages do not name a country of manufacture. Certifications. Society Limonta states none 14. Nothing to check. We found no record for the company in the Alliance's directory (searched 2026-10-20). Price. At the US store, the tablecloth is around $450 (170 x 170 cm), $550 (170 x 240 cm) or $590 (170 x 300 cm); at the EU/UK store, around €395, €495 and €515 for the same sizes, as of October 2026 1415. The 45 x 45 cm Bon napkin is around $55 in the US and €45 in Europe; the page names a single napkin and gives no set size 1617. Some colours and sizes were out of stock on October 20 14. Who it suits. A long table that is used every day and laid properly on Sundays, in colours from white to chestnut and ginger. The US store ships to the US and Canada only; the EU/UK store serves Europe, Britain and Switzerland 1415. Care. Machine wash at 40° 14.

3. Once Milano: napkins in light linen

Why it earns a place. A linen house that makes most pieces to order in Italy and offers more than thirty colours. Remodelista featured its checked table and bed linens in July 2024, calling it a "luxe London-based textiles co." 22. Fiber and weave. "100% handmade Italian linen" in Once Milano's light linen, 165 g/m², each napkin 45 x 45 cm (about 18 inches) 21. Certifications. Once Milano states none 21. Nothing to check. Price. Around $97 for a set of four in a solid colour, or $101 in black-and-white check, at Once Milano's US prices; around €84 or €88 when shopping from Italy, as of October 2026 21. Who it suits. A table in colour, napkins matched or mixed. Two cautions from the maker: most pieces are made to order, so allow up to 20 working days before they reach the shipper, and orders outside the EU ship without VAT or duties paid, which may be due to the carrier on delivery 21. Once Milano suggests pairing them with its runners, placemats or tablecloths 21.

4. Merci: washed linen napkins and tea towels

Why it earns a place. The Paris concept store on the boulevard Beaumarchais, known for its own-label household linen. Remodelista listed "their famous French household linen" among Merci's draws when the shop went online in June 2013 28. The pieces are simple and fairly priced for linen. Fiber and weave. The washed linen napkin is 100 percent linen, 200 g/m² and 45 x 45 cm; the washed linen tea towel is 100 percent linen and 55 x 70 cm, with a hanging loop 2325. Merci says its linen "is made from flax fibres grown in France and is OEKO-TEX® STANDARD 100 certified" 23. It publishes no certificate number, and the product pages do not name a country of manufacture. Certifications. OEKO-TEX is Merci's claim; with no number published, we could not check it on OEKO-TEX's records. Price. Around €13 for a napkin (some patterns €15) and around €20 for a tea towel (some €24) at Merci as of October 2026 232425. Merci prices in euros only, including for US addresses. Who it suits. A starter set of good linen, or a dozen napkins for a long table, bought in person in the Marais. Merci ships to the US by UPS, at €17 for parcels up to 1 kg, €28 up to 3.5 kg and €36 above that; US customs duties and fees are the buyer's to pay 26. Care. Wash at 40°C 23.

5. Frette: Convivium napkin set

Why it earns a place. Pure linen napkins, made in Italy, from Frette. We found no independent review of Frette's table linen; this pick rests on the maker's published specifications, and we rank it accordingly. Fiber and weave. "Set includes 4 napkins in 100% linen. Made in Italy," according to Frette 29. Frette lists the product dimensions as 15 x 25 cm (6 x 10 inches) and does not say whether that is the napkin folded or laid flat 2930. Certifications. Frette states none 29. Nothing to check. We found no record for Frette in the Alliance's directory (searched 2026-10-20). Price. Around $300 for a set of four at Frette's US site and around €130 at its Italian site, as of October 2026 2930. That is the widest gap between US and European prices in this guide, and a reason to buy it in Italy. Who it suits. A formal table, in white, grey or dark brown. Frette offers complimentary US ground shipping 29. Care. Machine wash cold with a mild detergent and no bleach or whiteners; dry low, finish on the line, then iron 29.

Better value: MagicLinen napkins and tea towel

Why it earns a place. Not a heritage house, and priced well below the others. It is here as the better-value choice, and because its certificate is one we could confirm. We found no independent review of MagicLinen's table or kitchen linen. Fiber and weave. The napkins are 100 percent linen "made from European Flax," stone washed, about 46 x 46 cm and sold in pairs; the tea towel is also 100 percent linen from European flax, about 190 gsm and 50 x 70 cm 3132. MagicLinen says all orders ship from Lithuania, "where our linens are crafted locally" 31. Certifications. MagicLinen's page prints OEKO-TEX STANDARD 100 certificate 2019OK0776 31. In the OEKO-TEX Label Check, that number is a valid STANDARD 100 certificate held by UAB Magic Crafts of Vilnius, the company named in MagicLinen's terms 34. Its scope is bleached, dyed and finished woven fabrics, including fabrics of 100 percent linen (checked 2026-10-20) 33. STANDARD 100 means the textile was tested for harmful substances against OEKO-TEX's criteria 3; it is a company-level certificate for UAB Magic Crafts' woven fabrics, not one that names these napkins, and not a safety guarantee or a claim of ours about them. Price. Around $29 / €29 for a set of two napkins and around $16 / €16 for a tea towel at MagicLinen as of October 2026. Both were on sale on the US site on October 20, at 10 percent off ($26.10 and $14.40); sales come and go 3132. Who it suits. A first set of linen napkins, or a weekly stack of tea towels. MagicLinen says US orders include international duties and tariffs 31. Care. Warm, gentle cycle up to 40°C, no bleach or softener; air dry or tumble low 31.

Shopping for linen in Europe

Belgium. Libeco's own shop is at Tieltstraat 114 in Meulebeke, open Wednesday to Saturday, 10:00 to 18:00. Libeco says it has an outlet corner 12.

Italy. Society Limonta's Milan flagship is at via Palermo 1, with further flagships in Rome and Lecce, a shop-in-shop at la Rinascente, and stores in Brussels, Vienna, Geneva and New York 18. Frette's Italian price for the Convivium napkins was about half its US price on October 20 2930.

France. Merci is at 111 boulevard Beaumarchais in the 3rd arrondissement (Métro Saint-Sébastien–Froissart), open daily 27. In the north, Charvet Éditions, based in Armentières, makes tea towels, aprons and table linen; it describes its products as "all woven and manufactured in our workshops in France" 37, and its tea towel with embroidery is 100 percent linen at 165 g/m² 38. Charvet says its products are available to professionals and asks individuals to contact it for stockists near them; its site shows no consumer prices 3738.

Lithuania. Beyond MagicLinen, Siulas, in Biržai, sells table linen online as Linen Fashion. The Alliance lists Siulas AB as holding a Masters of Flax Fibre certificate covering weaving and finished products, valid to December 27, 2026 (checked 2026-10-20) 39. Its ORSON tablecloth, for example, is 100 percent linen at 200 g/m², around €123 for 150 x 250 cm as of October 2026 40; shipping to the US is €30, with US duties paid by the buyer 41.

Portugal. No Portuguese house made this edition, and we would like to add one. We could not open Abyss & Habidecor's own site to check its specifications. Graccioza describes its Egoist towels as having an "antibacterial treatment" but does not name it 42, and the Clean Standard starts with materials that are disclosed.

Bringing it home

In your suitcase. US Customs and Border Protection says "a returning resident is eligible for the $800 duty-free personal exemption every 31 days, having remained for no less than 48 hours beyond the territorial limits of the United States," and that "anything you bring back that you did not have when you left the United States must be 'declared'" 36 (CBP's page, checked October 20, 2026). Linen packs flat.

By post or courier. CBP says that goods of all countries "will no longer be eligible for the administrative exemption from duty and certain tax at 19 U.S.C. § 1321(a)(2)(C) effective 12:01a.m. on August 29, 2025," and may not receive "de minimis" clearance "regardless of their value, country of origin, mode of transportation, or method of entry" 35. In June 2026 CBP said new rules "indefinitely suspend" that treatment 45. A parcel of napkins from Europe may therefore carry duty and fees. Some makers include them in the price (Libeco's US store and MagicLinen say they do 731); others leave them to the buyer (Once Milano, Merci and Siulas say so 212641). Check before you order. This is general information from CBP's pages, checked October 20, 2026, not customs, tax or legal advice; rules change, so check CBP before you travel or order.

Tax refunds. Visitors from outside the EU may be able to reclaim VAT on purchases above a minimum in one shop; our French Pharmacy Edit explains how it works in France. Ask the shop before you pay. This is general information, not tax advice.

Skip these if...

  • You want a pressed, formal table without an iron. Washed and froissé linen is sold for its natural, creased look 1431. Frette's care note for the Convivium napkins ends with "fold and iron" 29.
  • You need certainty on certifications. Among the six picks, only two certifier records are confirmed: Libeco NV's company-level Masters of Linen certificate for weaving, which does not name a product 4, and OEKO-TEX STANDARD 100 certificate 2019OK0776 for UAB Magic Crafts' woven fabrics 33. For the other picks, the makers give no number to check.
  • You are in a hurry. Once Milano makes most pieces to order and asks for up to 20 working days before shipping 21.
  • You want napkins larger than 45 cm. Most of the napkins here are 45 to 46 cm square (about 18 inches) 16212331; Frette does not say whether its listed 15 x 25 cm is folded or flat 29.
