A Slow Week on Lake Como

Seven unhurried days by boat and on foot: three lakeside hotels chosen for what they publish about their gardens, kitchens and spas, three historic gardens, MICHELIN-listed tables, and how to move, swim and boat safely on the lake.

A Slow Week on Lake Como

We choose from published evidence: what hotels, gardens and restaurants publish about themselves, guidebooks such as the MICHELIN Guide and Forbes Travel Guide, certifiers' own records, the ferry operator and the lake authority. We have not stayed at, eaten at, swum at or visited any of these places for this piece, so nothing here is a first-hand account. No hotel, garden or restaurant hosted us or gave us a media rate, free entry or a meal, and this piece contains no affiliate links. Hours, seasons and prices change, and many of these places close or shorten their hours in winter, so check with each one before you plan.

Last checked: October 19, 2026.

Lake Como is best taken slowly, and the lake itself sets the pace. Boats link the villages, the great gardens sit at the water's edge, and the distances are short enough that a week can hold a great deal without feeling rushed. This itinerary splits the week between two bases: three nights on the southern stretch near Como, then four on the central lake, near the point where the lake divides into two branches 7.

"Clean luxury," for this guide, means places that publish specifics: a certification we can confirm, a kitchen garden, a spa that names the products it uses. Where a hotel makes a claim, we name it as theirs. A spa brand is not a certification, and we have not checked the ingredient lists of any product named here. We have not yet given any of these hotels a Clean Score. That needs written answers from each hotel, which we have not yet requested.

Where to stay

Choose one of the first two hotels for the first three nights, then move up the lake to the third.

Passalacqua

Via Besana 59, Moltrasio, on the western shore north of Como 5.

A small hotel, with 24 rooms across an 18th-century villa, the former stables and a house by the lake 1. The MICHELIN Guide gives it Three MICHELIN Keys ("an extraordinary stay") 1, and it is No. 5 on The 50 Best Hotels 2026 list, which also names it The Best Hotel in Europe 2026 4.

The clean-luxury case rests on the garden. The hotel says its terraced grounds include a kitchen garden and an olive grove, and that "all the fruit, all the herbs, are here for guests to gather, as are the eggs of our free-range chickens" 2. The MICHELIN Guide describes chef Viviana Varese's cooking as built on ingredients "from the garden to the table," and says the bed linen is by Beltrami, made from a material derived from birch trees 1; that is MICHELIN's description, and we have not checked the fiber or any certification. For the spa, the hotel uses Seed to Skin, a Tuscan skincare line it describes as based on "natural, organic and wild ingredients" 3. That is the hotel's description; we have not checked a certification. The sauna, steam bath and a heated indoor pool sit in a vaulted gallery dug beneath the gardens in the 18th century, and yoga and meditation are held in a circle of old magnolias 3. We found no sustainability statement or certification.

  • Season. We could not find the hotel's published season dates. Check the hotel's dates before you book.
  • Getting there. Moltrasio has a ferry stop 25; ask the hotel about car transfers from the Milan airports.
  • Price. Rates vary by date and season; check with the hotel.

Mandarin Oriental, Lago di Como

Via Enrico Caronti 69, Blevio, on the eastern shore, about five minutes' drive from the center of Como 17.

Of the three hotels here, this is the only one with a certification we could confirm on the certifier's own records. The hotel says it is certified by the Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC), with the audit carried out by United Certification Systems Limited (UCSL) 13. The GSTC's Certified Hotels Directory lists it as certified to the GSTC Standard by UCSL, with a certification date of November 26, 2024, and the current cycle running to November 25, 2027 14. We checked the directory on October 19, 2026. GSTC certification covers how a hotel manages sustainability; it is not a rating of the air, linens or bath products in the rooms. The hotel also describes a botanical garden of more than 50 species, including rhododendrons, camellias and magnolias, electric cars and vans for short transfers, and a project in which it donates leftover bread to be brewed into beer, to reduce food waste 13.

Forbes Travel Guide rates the hotel Five-Star and describes three Neoclassical villas, boathouses and gardens over six acres 12; it rates the spa Four-Star, with six treatment rooms, two of them spa suites 16. The hotel lists a wet area with a whirlpool, ice pool, saline bath, Finnish sauna and steam bath, and a 40-meter infinity pool floating on the lake, designed by Herzog & de Meuron 15. Its spa page does not name the product house, so ask the spa if that matters to you. The minimum age for the spa and fitness center is 16 15. The MICHELIN Guide lists the hotel's 75 rooms in its selection 18.

  • Season. We could not find the hotel's published season dates. Check the hotel's dates before you book.
  • Getting there. The hotel puts Milano Malpensa about 50 to 55 minutes away by car, Linate about 70 minutes, and the central-lake towns of Bellagio, Menaggio, Tremezzo and Varenna about an hour by car or boat 17.
  • Price. Rates vary by date and season; check with the hotel.

Grand Hotel Tremezzo

Via Statale 5401, Tremezzina, on the western shore, looking across the water toward Bellagio 811.

Forbes Travel Guide says the hotel opened in 1910 and is still family-run, and rates it Four-Star 8; the MICHELIN Guide gives it Two MICHELIN Keys 7. Its park was once the botanical garden of Villa Carlotta, next door 79, and the hotel says an olive tree more than 300 years old stands at its highest point 9. The spa is in Villa Emilia, which the hotel describes as the former library of Villa Carlotta, and both the hotel and MICHELIN name Santa Maria Novella as its skincare line 710. The hotel lists an indoor infinity pool, a circuit with a Mediterranean bath, steam room, sauna and ice fountain, and an Italian hammam in Lasa marble, with the spa open every day from 9 am to 8 pm 10. MICHELIN also notes a pool floating in front of the hotel's beach 7. We found no sustainability statement or certification.

  • Season. The MICHELIN Guide lists the hotel as open each year from mid-March through the end of October 7, so the 2026 season is in its last weeks. We could not find the 2027 opening date.
  • Getting there. Forbes Travel Guide puts Milano Malpensa about 1 hour to 1 hour 15 minutes away 8. The Tremezzo–Villa Carlotta ferry stop is about 400 meters from Villa Carlotta's entrance 20.
  • Price. Rates vary by date and season; check with the hotel.

The week

Plan the days around closures: Villa del Balbianello is closed on Mondays and Wednesdays 19, Materia on Sundays and Mondays 30, Kitchen on Mondays 31, and Hosteria del Platano on Tuesdays 35. Hours below are as the MICHELIN Guide or each place lists them, checked October 19, 2026.

Day 1: arrive and settle in

Arrive from Milan and keep the evening simple. In the center of Moltrasio, a few meters from the lake, La Veranda is a long-established family restaurant whose dining room opens onto a veranda in summer; the MICHELIN Guide describes traditional cooking with generous portions of fish from the lake and the sea 32. Hours: lunch 12:30 to 2:30 pm daily, dinner 7:30 to 9:15 pm (to 9 pm on Sunday). Price: €€ on MICHELIN's price scale 32.

Day 2: stay put

Spend the morning in the hotel's own grounds: the garden and olive grove at Passalacqua 2, or the botanical garden at the Mandarin Oriental 13. If you book a spa session, see the caution under "Before you go."

Dinner across the water at Il Sereno Al Lago. In Torno, inside the Il Sereno hotel, this restaurant holds one MICHELIN Star. The guide credits chef Raffaele Lenzi with regional references, vegan dishes, Asian influences and Lombard, lake-inspired creations, served in summer on a terrace with arched openings over the water 29. Ask your hotel about getting there by boat or car. Hours: lunch 12:30 to 2:30 pm and dinner 7 to 9:30 pm, daily. Price: €€€€ on MICHELIN's price scale 29.

Day 3: Cernobbio and Como

Two starred kitchens sit at the southern end of the lake; choose one.

  • Materia, Cernobbio. Davide Caranchini's cooking holds one MICHELIN Star; the guide says the restaurant has no lake view but recommends it for creative, experimental dishes, singling out a dessert called "Latte & Miele" 30. Hours: lunch 12 to 1:30 pm, Tuesday to Saturday; dinner from 7:30 pm on Tuesday and 7 pm Wednesday to Saturday, until 9:30 pm; closed Sunday and Monday. Price: €€€€ 30.
  • Kitchen, Como. Also one MICHELIN Star. The guide says the chef uses herbs and vegetables from the restaurant's own biodynamic kitchen garden, which you can see by the entrance, and builds a "Green" tasting menu on them 31. "Biodynamic" is MICHELIN's description; we have not checked a certification. Hours: dinner 7:30 to 10:30 pm Tuesday to Sunday, lunch 12:30 to 2:30 pm Wednesday to Sunday; closed Monday. Price: €€€€ 31.

Day 4: up the lake to Tremezzo, and Villa Carlotta

Move to the Grand Hotel Tremezzo by boat if you can travel light; the ferry operator's journey planner lets you search between ports such as Moltrasio, Como and Tremezzo, with or without the fast service 25. Ask both hotels about luggage and transfers.

Afternoon: Villa Carlotta. Next door to the hotel, the villa was built at the end of the 17th century by the Clerici family of Milan, and keeps a museum and a botanical garden that it opens to visitors each year 40. For 2026, the villa lists hours of 10 am to 7 pm from March 20 to October 18, then 10 am to 6 pm from October 19 to November 8 (last ticket at 5 pm, museum closes at 5:30 pm), followed by special autumn-winter openings from 10 am to 4 pm (last ticket 3:30 pm) on November 14–15, 21–22 and 28–29 and December 5–8 20. On other closed days it can be visited only by reservation 20. The 2026 adult ticket is €17.50, and the ticket covers both the garden and the museum 2021. The villa says almost the entire garden is accessible, but several paths run uphill; there is a café, a bookshop and a picnic area 21.

Day 5: Villa del Balbianello

The FAI (Fondo per l'Ambiente Italiano), a national non-profit foundation that protects Italian art, nature and landscape, runs this villa on a wooded promontory near Lenno; the explorer Guido Monzino left it to the FAI in 1988 1939. Booking is required. The FAI lists it as open from March to January every day except Monday and Wednesday, 10 am to 6 pm, with the last entry to the park at 5 pm and the last guided tour of the villa at 4 pm. From November, hours shorten to 10 am to 5 pm, and in December and January it opens only on listed dates 19.

The FAI's itemized prices are €15 for an adult park-only ticket and €25 for the villa and park, which includes a guided tour of the interiors of about 50 minutes in Italian or English 19. The summary box at the top of the same page gives a different figure, "Adults €22 - Children €12", which does not match the itemized list, so confirm the price when you book. To get there, the FAI describes a 1-kilometer uphill path from Lenno, partly gravel, of about 25 minutes, or a longer 2.5-kilometer trail of about 45 minutes, recommends suitable shoes, and says the walk is not suitable for strollers or people with mobility difficulties; otherwise, take a taxi boat from the Lido di Lenno, which is a paid service run by others and must be booked 19. There is no café, only water, soft drinks and small snacks at the bookshop, so bring water 19.

Dinner: Filo, Lezzeno. On the opposite shore, the MICHELIN Guide describes a lakeside terrace looking across to Comacina Island and the Balbianello itself, with Mediterranean-flavored dishes and three tasting menus, one of them vegetarian 33. Ask your hotel how best to reach it. Hours: lunch 12:30 to 2 pm and dinner 7 to 10 pm, daily. Price: €€€ on MICHELIN's price scale 33.

Day 6: Bellagio and the gardens of Villa Melzi

Cross to Bellagio by boat; a car ferry also links Cadenabbia, Bellagio, Varenna and Menaggio 25. The gardens of Villa Melzi d'Eril were laid out in the early 1800s with the villa, as an English-style garden that frames the lake and mountains as a single landscape 22. About 250 camellias grow on the estate, many of them near the Loppia and Bellagio entrances, including rare 19th-century Italian varieties 23. The gardens are on the Lungo Lario Manzoni 24. Their website did not list 2026 opening hours, season dates or prices when we checked on October 19, 2026, so check at the entrance or write to the gardens before you go 24.

Dinner: Mistral, Bellagio. At the tip of the Bellagio promontory where the lake's two branches meet, MICHELIN describes a covered veranda with views of the opposite shore, a grand-hotel atmosphere with piano music in the evening, and Italian and international dishes 34. Hours: dinner 7:30 to 9:30 pm, daily. Price: €€€€ on MICHELIN's price scale 34.

Day 7: Varenna, and home

Take the boat to Varenna on the eastern shore. Hosteria del Platano is a family-run restaurant on the main road above the lake, which MICHELIN describes as serving traditional cooking with a focus on local fish, in a stone-walled, vaulted dining room with an outdoor space 35. Hours: lunch 12 to 2 pm and dinner 7 to 9 pm, Monday and Wednesday to Saturday; Sunday lunch only; closed Tuesday. Price: €€ 35. If you are staying on, Visteria, in the Royal Victoria hotel on Varenna's central piazza, has a few tables facing the Bellagio promontory, and its chef brings flavors from his native Campania 36. Hours: dinner 7 to 9:30 pm, daily. Price: €€€€ 36.

From Varenna, the Varenna-Esino station is on the line to Milan 20.

Getting around

  • Boats. Navigazione Laghi runs the public boats on the lake. Its Lake Como timetable page has a journey planner between ports, an option to include the fast service, and timetables for the ships and fast service between Como and Colico, the Bellagio–Lecco line and the car ferry between Bellagio, Cadenabbia, Varenna and Menaggio 25. Vehicles travel only between the car-ferry ports 26. Timetables change with the season, so use the operator's current timetables rather than an old printout, and check its notices page for suspensions: for example, it posted a suspension of navigation, with a replacement bus service, for the 77th Centomiglia del Lario on October 9–11, 2026 27. Fares vary by route; see the operator's rates page 28.
  • Bus and train. Villa Carlotta's directions list the ASF Autolinee C110 bus between Como, Menaggio and Colico, which stops near the villa, and trains from Milan to Como San Giovanni or Como Nord Lago, or to Varenna-Esino on the Milan–Lecco–Tirano line, then the boat 20.
  • By car. Villa Carlotta recommends arriving by boat, which it says lets you avoid the traffic; if you drive, it suggests the Villa Mainona car park in Tremezzina in high season 20.

Swimming and boating

  • Swimming. Swim only where bathing is permitted, inside marked swimming areas, and well away from ferry piers and boat lanes. Ask your hotel or the town which spots are designated for bathing and whether bathing is allowed there at the moment. If you swim from a hotel dock or a boat, ask the hotel about local rules first.
  • The rules. Bathing and the use of small craft on the lake are governed by the lake authority, the Autorità di Bacino del Lario e dei Laghi Minori, which issued Ordinance No. 1/2026 on the subject in February 2026, with an English version 37. We have not reproduced its rules here; read it before you swim from a boat or take a boat out. The authority also posts notices for particular stretches of water, such as a July 2026 cautious-navigation notice for the waters off Villa Cagni Troubetzkoy in Blevio, the village where the Mandarin Oriental stands 38.
  • Speed and distance from shore. Go slowly near the shore, piers, swimmers and paddlers, and ask the hire company or your hotel which speed and distance-from-shore rules apply where you are. The official text is the lake authority's Ordinance No. 1/2026 37.
  • Traffic. Passalacqua notes that the lake narrows toward Como, where boat traffic can be heavy in summer, and suggests the calmer water of early morning or late afternoon for paddleboards and kayaks 6.
  • Hiring a boat. Ask the hire company or your hotel what licence, if any, the boat requires, and about life jackets and the weather before you set out.

Seasonal notes

  • Spring. Villa Carlotta says camellias are the first major flowering of the spring and that its rhododendrons are in full bloom from mid-March to mid-April 21. Villa Melzi has about 250 camellias 23, and Grand Hotel Tremezzo says its hydrangeas and azaleas begin to bud in spring 9.
  • Summer. Villa Carlotta describes hydrangeas, roses and citrus pergolas in summer 21. Passalacqua says boat traffic near Como is heavier in summer 6.
  • Autumn. Grand Hotel Tremezzo's maples turn in autumn, the hotel says 9. Hours shorten: Villa Carlotta from October 19 20, and Villa del Balbianello from November 19. Grand Hotel Tremezzo closes at the end of October 7.
  • Winter. Villa Carlotta opens only on listed dates in November and early December 20, and Villa del Balbianello on listed dates in December and early January 19. Many hotels and restaurants close or shorten their hours; check before you book.

Before you go

  • Seasons. As of October 19, 2026, Grand Hotel Tremezzo's season runs to the end of October 7; Villa Carlotta is on autumn hours from October 19 20, and Villa del Balbianello shortens its hours from November 19. We could not find published season dates for Passalacqua or the Mandarin Oriental, or 2026 hours for Villa Melzi. Check each one before you plan.
  • Book ahead. Villa del Balbianello requires booking 19, and the starred restaurants have limited tables.
  • Spas. Saunas, steam baths, hammams, ice pools and plunge pools are hot or cold by design. If you are pregnant or have a health condition, ask your doctor and the spa before you book.
  • Walking. The path to Villa del Balbianello is uphill and partly gravel 19, and Villa Carlotta has several uphill paths 21. Wear comfortable shoes.
  • If you have allergies or sensitivities, contact the hotel or restaurant directly before you book to ask about bath products, fragrance and food, and talk to your doctor if you have questions about your health.

The short version

  • For a certification we confirmed: the Mandarin Oriental, Lago di Como, listed in the GSTC Certified Hotels Directory when we checked on October 19, 2026 1314.
  • For a kitchen garden and a small house: Passalacqua, with Three MICHELIN Keys and 24 rooms 12.
  • For the central lake and the gardens: Grand Hotel Tremezzo, next to Villa Carlotta, whose spa uses Santa Maria Novella products 71020. For any spa, see the caution under "Before you go."
  • Gardens: Villa Carlotta, Villa del Balbianello (booking required; closed Mondays and Wednesdays) and Villa Melzi 192022.
  • Eat: Il Sereno Al Lago, Materia and Kitchen for MICHELIN-starred cooking 293031; La Veranda and Hosteria del Platano for traditional cooking and fish 3235.
  • Every claim about a hotel, garden or restaurant is that place's own, a named guidebook's, the certifier's, the ferry operator's, the lake authority's or a named publication's. We have not stayed, dined, swum or visited for this piece.
